These are definitions of jargon that you may see frequently when reading our articles or when visiting some other university related websites. Please note that these definitions are limited to our articles and need not necessarily represent the general terms used in universities as it varies from university to university.

  • Programme:
  • The degree in which you have been enrolled in, e.g. Bachelor of Engineering, Bachelor of Commerce

  • Faculty/ School:
  • A collation of departments in a similar field in an educational institution, e.g. Faculty/ School of Arts; Faculty/ School of Music

  • Course:
  • The general term of what you want to study, e.g. Physics, Economics

  • Subjects:
  • Specific classes within a course, e.g. Introduction to Microeconomics; Literature in the 19th Century

  • Compulsory subjects:
  • Subjects that are mandatory under the programme which you have enrolled in. Of which, failing to take this subject would hinder your graduation.

  • Major:
  • The course in which you have decided to specialise in, implying that majority of the subjects in your programme will consist of this course.

  • Minor:
  • The course in which you have decided to pursue a bit further, but not specialise in, implying that a significant number of subject that you take are from this course.

  • Electives:
  • Subjects that maybe within or outside of your faculty. Something you do for ‘fun’, to explore your interest.
